“A Bad Place to Have an Earthquake”

I am headed to Bangladesh in a few weeks with veteran humanitarian photojournalist Zoriah. We began discussing details of this trip in November but put a hold on the discussion as Zoriah was traveling much of December. One of his assignments was in Haiti. We planned on getting back together about Bangladesh when he returned in January.

Our first talk was actually the day after the Haitian earthquake when there was very little known about the extent of the devastation. I asked Zoriah if he was going back and he said he wasn’t sure.

A few days later we talked and Zoriah said, “Well, it looks like I’m going to Haiti.” He had actually been in Port-Au-Prince just weeks earlier. We talked a bit about his assignment in Port-Au-Prince and the extreme poverty in Haiti. In our discussion he made the comment, “I remember standing on top of our hotel thinking this would be a bad place to have an earthquake.”

I haven’t heard from Zoriah since he left for Haiti but I’m sure he will have some incredible photographs and stories to share. Take some time to check out his blog at Zoriah.net. I have also included some of his blog posts about Haiti in the links below.
